Light and shadow in their ever-changing dialectic are the main protagonists in Edite Grinbergas painting; her core theme, the fluid space between light and dark. Still life and interiors are her genre; her style combines figurative hyperrealism with minimalistic reductionism. Technical virtuosity grounded in the academic tradition distinguishes her work, but this capability never becomes an aim in itself.
Her painting technique relies on partial transparency and is, in a strange way, invisible. Only occasionally are traces of brush strokes discernable. The white of the base coat illuminates the delicate layer of colour above, creating a picture surface that glows with an inner force. The optical spectrum of the draughtsmanship extends from inexorable sharpness in detail to delicate soft-focus effects in shadows and backgrounds. The subtly modelled half-tones allow volumes to project three-dimensionally from the painting, and spaces to win depth.
Into this almost mystical depth, objects are placed, ever bathed in light and shadow: a sober, analytic dedication to detail and moment. Through the medium of light, time is segmented into its elementary constituents, each constituent dissected with concentrated precision. The unique and transitory, apparently fortuitous, fall of light brings the fragile beauty of the moment into consciousness.
